Homeless Veterans Housing

NWI Veterans Village is a Permanent Supportive Housing program specifically for veterans battling homelessness. The property contains 44 single, multi-family units. All apartments are fully furnished, including all major appliances. There are no utility charges, electricity and water services are included. Free laundry machines are available for residents on all three floors. We offer free Internet service in our computer lab, as well as a weight/fitness room, community room/cafeteria, rooftop patio and urban garden. NWI Veterans Village is an LIHTC Section 42 Federal Housing First program. Rental charges are determined on an individual basis, and may not exceed 30% of a renter's annual income. The annual income limit for qualified applicants is currently set at $30,600. We provide a variety of Permanent Supportive Services, including on-site VA case management, informational presentations, community events, pantry supplies, counseling services, rental assistance, NA meetings, etc. Please call 219-951-0460 to make an appointment.

This innovative dog training class gives the wonderful dogs in rescues and shelters a chance to live and to serve by helping to heal the stresses, PTSD/TBI, and wounds so many soldiers battle when they come home. We offer this class at "no cost" to Veterans who qualify. Our training staff will assist the Veteran in choosing a compatible dog from the local dog shelters and rescues. The Veteran and the dog will attend training classes to facilitate the formation of the "Healing Team" while learning new skills to help them function in their every day lives. Our Goal in this training class is to encourage and support the Veteran and the dog to be able to pass the Canine Good Citizen Evaluation.

Temporary Housing: Veterans who qualify may receive transitional housing for 120 days to one year. Services are available for substance free veterans prepared for our following admissions criteria as: 1. Veterans 18 and over are eligible 2. Veterans must be certified as homeless 3. Veterans must be drug and alcohol free for 30 days 4. Veterans must be willing to follow and abide by all program rules and service planning 5. Veterans must be willing to work or enroll in an educational institution/program Housing includes room and board, three hot meals, a stable environment and transportation will be provided to those Veterans who need to be transported to search for jobs or have medical appointment in Crown. Point, Indiana or Illinois. A clothes closet and laundry room is also available to our clients. Services: We are currently providing individual therapy, small group therapy, resocialization counseling, financial management training, independent living, vocational rehabilitation planning, scheduled drug and alcohol intervention, assistance with policies and procedures for acquiring veterans benefits, educational assistance and transportation. Our case management staff includes: LCSW, Intake Coordinator, Task Instructors and Interns. VLCS Mental Health Clinic is located at 501 W. Ridge Road, Gary, IN 46408. VLCS also offer service to the entire Veteran Community. You do not have to be a resident to receive our service. Spiritual Guidance is also offer to our clients to help them rebuild their lives. Vocational - Veterans may receive job readiness training in various areas. some of these areas may include life skill development, construction, and computer technology. Supportive Housing Housing Stabilization: Room and board, a stable environment and transportation will be provided to those Veterans who qualify for permanent housing status.
